This post has been a long time coming. Until now I haven’t been able to correctly articulate it. This is probably far from articulate anyway. But it still needs to be said. Because I believe that with this change comes a lot more progress, and clarity, for the Crochet Buddies site as a whole.
As the name implies, Crochet Buddies started out as a site exclusive to crochet, for those who want to learn about the craft, and those who are experts in the field and want to share knowledge with others; essentially, forming a community. Why crochet? For starters, it’s the craft I have the most experience in, and am most at ease talking about (when it was just me running the site). However, I realize that from early on, the mission statement had not been the clearest in my mind; aside from “crochet” and “crafts,” there needed to be more structure and a more direct approach, which was considerably lacking on my part. Which brings us to the current situation.
Ever since the beginning of Crochet Buddies, I had been planning to start up another site: one for the sharing of academic knowledge and insight, involving more academically attuned critical thinking. However, the thought of managing two sites and blogs simultaneously was intimidating. So I left things as they were and stuck to crafts. Until… other topics started springing up. Gradually, Crochet Buddies transformed into a not-so-craft-related site. And now my worry is, it’s become too vague. If you want to know about tennis, you don’t want to have to sort through endless information about football, even if they’re both sports. The same goes with crafts, versus everything else. It’s not fair to those of you who are coming in primarily to learn about crafts, and finding loads of other things to have to read through. It’s also confusing for those new to the site.
To emphasize the point, here is the first paragraph of who we are and what we do, on the About page (what I wrote as the mission statement): “Crochet Buddies is a site, store and blog dedicated to all who love crochet; to those experienced in the handicraft, and those who would like to learn; to the young, the young at heart, and the ever-inquisitive. In essence, this is a place for crafters to share insight, ideas, tips and advice, and everything else related to crochet, and other crafts as well.”
That community, implied above, is being hindered by an overly-diverse arena of topics. I’m addressing this now because I’ve finally finished building the other website, and… I think it’s time to reconfigure the functionality and specificity of Crochet Buddies. The other Buddies agree.
From now on, anything not directly related to crafts will be published on my other website, Homeschool Adventures – established and run by me and some of the Buddies. HS-A features book reviews, curriculum reviews, travelogues, in-depth photography posts, and plenty of other intriguing things. You can follow that site as well, to read more about those topics, and to see what else we’re up to from time to time. (There are some final things I’m polishing up, but the site’s officially there.) Managing such vastly different fields online feels like an entirely different part of the universe, but it’ll be fun to see how both CB and HS-A progress.
Now, what about all the photo stories, non-craft T&As, TAODC posts, etc. already on Crochet Buddies? The ones currently published on CB will stay, as a reminder that they’re still out there, that they still exist… and because I don’t have the heart to delete them (even though they’re already re-posted on HS-A). I just won’t be continuing to publish them here, so as not to distract fellow crafters with information that might not be the most useful to them. If you’re interested in reading those posts specifically, you can follow HS-A, as those kinds of posts will be very frequent there. As for the other types of CB Blog posts, I’m still trying to decide which ones stay on this site and which don’t. More details on that will be posted in the next day or so. (Feel free to share your thoughts below.)
In the meantime… what’s going to happen to Crochet Buddies? Well, to start with, there will be an abundance of posts related to knitting, embroidery, and other crafts. I have a few interviews lined up, as well as new patterns and projects to share… all of which will be strictly related to crafts. CB is still growing; it’s just going to mature in a different way, the way it’s supposed to be.
This change also means that posting won’t be as frequent on Crochet Buddies, unless it accurately corresponds to crafts, or something along those lines. Posts probably won’t come every day; more like two to four times a week. The new academic year is starting very soon, so time is now more restricted than ever. It’s time to make these posts matter even more, during times when one or more of the Buddies will be absent from blogging. In this way, it will be a lot easier for everyone to stay focused, and to enjoy both sides of the blogging spectrum; study-related and hobby-related. (If you don’t see a post on here for awhile, go over to Homeschool Adventures and see what we’ve been up to.)
So really, this isn’t the end of the “fun” on Crochet Buddies. Far, far from it. In fact, now you’ll have another entirely new site to check out, in addition to this one. 🙂 They will both be more specific to their own content, and in doing so, will create more opportunity to develop in a healthy, productive manner.
Hopefully this all makes sense, and that you, Dear Reader, understand why this change is taking place. Now it’s time to keep Crochet Buddies running strong, under this new structure. We’ll see how this goes. I’m looking forward to making the necessary changes to the sites, and turning them both into successes. The other Buddies agree as well. 🙂
P.S. This couldn’t have been timed any better, for the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. hehe Have fun watching it today!
