I’ve been going through all the extra balls of yarn waiting to be used, and am shocked at how much has accumulated over the years. It seems like there’s an entire shop’s worth of yarn here! Most of the yarn was used to make a few small projects, and subsequently left untouched; the rest haven’t even been acquainted with crochet hooks and knitting needles.
It doesn’t make sense to sell any of the extra yarn at this point, so I’ve made up my mind to use all of it up by the end of the summer. Which doesn’t sound like a difficult goal (especially to the very speedy, experienced crafters out there). The only problem is, most of the projects I’ll be making are smaller — doll-sized, in fact — so it’ll take a lot more time to use up everything, based on the smaller scale. Ah well… at least there won’t be any worry about enough materials!
I plan on making a few ‘well-rounded’ outfits and accessories as the weeks go by; not just for the summer, but for other seasons as well. This will make up for the fall months, when there won’t be nearly as much time to make anything. I’ve set aside festive yarn (red, white and green) for holiday outfits, and will focus on more summery colors for the time being.
On the topic of rediscovering things… it’s shocking how many items I don’t even remember having made over the years, until I open a drawer or a little stash and get jolted back down memory lane. Anyone else feel that way?
The dolls had a ‘panel discussion’ recently, and upon further reflection, determined that they have just about everything they need to wear year ’round, so now I can concentrate on making more items to sell (with them modeling, of course). I’ll be testing prototype designs before making the final style in various color combinations, and eventually selling them for other collectors and their dolls to enjoy.
In the meantime, the only items I’ll be shopping for at craft stores will be snaps and buttons — definitely NOT yarn. My old rule of not buying one new skein until I’ve used up at least two (or, in this case, probably five), is going into full gear. (Update: Sadly, that didn’t turn out as planned… more on that later! 😉 )
It’ll be really cool to see what projects come out of this stash. In a way, I understand how Michelangelo felt when faced with a block of marble: the masterpiece is in there, you just need to “set it free”. That’s what I plan to do in the next few weeks with this yarn, and hopefully not get bogged down in the process!
